Why are School Libraries Important?
Not every child has easy access to a public library (kids in suburban or rural areas, especially those with working parents, might not be able to get a ride to the library, for example), but every child who attends school should have access to a good school library. These libraries hold the books kids can access every single school day — and reading is key for literacy and developing a strong mind. Books are expensive, and school libraries make reading accessible to all children.
How has a School Librarian or Library Impacted You?
I’m an academic librarian and a parent and an avid reader. I try to get to the public library regularly to keep my house stocked with good books, but my kids have easy access to great books at their level at school, which is so important. They’ve read so much more widely because of their school library, which has helped them build stronger minds.
How Does the Work of School Libraries Impact Your Work as a Library Professional or Person?
Students in college do better when they’re already comfortable using the library and asking questions of librarians. I’ve seen this at my job at a university. Strong school libraries better prepare students to research at the college level.
