With the rise of user tagging services (i.e. Flikr and Tumblr), many libraries are questioning the role of folksonomies (or user-generated metadata) in modern library cataloging. In this 15 minute coffee break, librarian Christina Manzo (Boston Public Library) will outline findings from her recent study “By the People, For the People”: Assessing the Value of Crowdsourced, User-Generated Metadata” as well as address topics such as the reliability of user-tags, how folksonomies can help and hurt your cataloging and the future of this burgeoning trend.
