What is the Library Worker Support Network?
The Library Worker Support Network is one of the first outcomes of the Urban Library Trauma Study released in 2022. Researchers on that project found that many library workers felt alone in their experiences of abuse, harassment or secondary trauma. During the forum multiple groups suggested peer support so the researchers made the following recommendation to help address the issue:
Recommendation #4: A series of peer-led support groups made up of library workers which allow workers at all levels to offer and receive support from colleagues at other institutions who can empathize and understand the unique challenges associated with library work. These will be online and workers will be able to opt into groups that match their interests, issues, and level of work (ie. workers of color, administrators, pages, etc.).
So we built it and started running sessions in 2024! We are committed to keeping LWSN running and FREE for all library workers at any type and size of library.
How does the Library Support Network Work?
The Library Worker Support Network (LWSN) is a peer-led, person-centered, trauma-informed support group. It is not a form of mental health treatment, but rather a confidential space for community and connection. The network was developed by library workers who participated in our 2022 trauma study and envisioned it as a response to the challenges they faced. Built by and for library workers, LWSN is grounded in the shared experiences of those who understand the stress, confusion, anger, trauma, and joy that come with working in libraries.
If you have never interacted with peer support before – what is it?
Peer support is a community gathering where we can share our successes, failures, and struggles with a group of our peers who get it. You may be familiar with the peer support structure in organizations like Alcoholics Anonymous or some grief support groups. LWSN is like those, but sprinkled in with the feeling of grabbing a meal with your closest friends and colleagues and being able to just talk – without judgement, having to problem solve or have it all figured out.
Since these groups are run by us and for us – our peer leaders are not medical or mental health professionals but fellow library workers. LWSN is just one part of the broader healing process, and how you engage is entirely up to you. What you take from the group depends on where you are and what you need.
